A terracotta "Bust of Alessandro Knips Macoppe" is here identified as the model for the well-known marble portrait by Antonio Bonazza in the Musei Civici, Padua. The terracotta bears the date 1745, which makes it possible to determine the chronology of the signed but not dated final work, and to establish a series of connections with the iconography of the illustrious Italian-German physician and professor. The study of this important chapter in Bonazza's career also provides occasion to reflect on the artist's genius and modernity in the realm of portraiture, aspects of which his Paduan patrons were not always aware, especially in the ecclesiastical milieu
