    Assistance to the needy has historically been marked by the action of women. In Brazil, institutions were founded and commanded by the first ladies of the Republic, such as Sarah Kubitschek and the Fundação Pioneiras Sociais, whose main attention was in public health care, especially women’s health. The analysis of Sarah Kubistchek's assistance activities, the central objective of this text, allows reflection on the social and political roles of the First Lady, as well as the approximations between delimited gender roles, the performance in assistance and the management of political capital.

    A assistência aos necessitados tem sido, historicamente, marcada pela atuação das mulheres. No Brasil, instituições foram fundadas e comandadas por primeiras-damas da República, como Sarah Kubitschek e a Fundação Pioneiras Sociais, cuja principal atuação foi junto aos cuidados com a saúde pública, em especial a feminina. A análise das atividades assistenciais de Sarah Kubistchek, objetivo central desse texto, oportuniza refl exão sobre os papéis sociais e políticos da primeira-dama, bem como as aproximações entre papéis de gênero delimitados, a atuação na assistência e o manejo de capitais políticos.
