El transporte intermodal en España: análisis comparativo respecto a Europa, retos y perspectivas futuras como objetivo estretégico

    La apuesta por un transporte intermodal de mercancías o intermodalidad eficiente define una de las líneas estratégicas más importantes de la Unión Europea, teniendo, además, unas notables implicaciones ambientales. En el caso concreto de España, la intermodalidad es muy limitada, y tiene su principal inconveniente en el ancho diferente de vía ferroviaria. El objetivo principal de este trabajo es determinar la situación actual del transporte de mercancías y la intermodalidad en España para delimitar diferentes objetivos estratégicos. La metodología aplicada en el estudio combina el análisis cuantitativo de datos oficiales sobre el transporte de mercancías obtenidos a partir de fuentes secundarias con el análisis cualitativo de los resultados de seis entrevistas semiestructuradas realizadas a profesionales del sector (fuente primaria). Los resultados del estudio advierten de que en España el transporte intermodal se encuentra bastante alejado de la media europea, siendo el segundo país continental de Europa que transporta una mayor cantidad de mercancías por carretera. Se concluye que, aunque actualmente la intermodalidad en España no es eficiente ni es un objetivo estratégico, deberá serlo en el medio plazo, pues, con la inversión y planificación adecuadas, contribuirá a propiciar una ordenación del transporte de mercancías eficiente y sostenible.

    The commitment to intermodal freight transport or efficient intermodality defines one of the most important strategic lines in this field within the European Union, which also has notable environmental implications. In the specific case of Spain, intermodality is very limited, and its main drawback is the different width of the railway track. The main objective of this article is to determine the current situation of freight transport and intermodality in Spain in order to define different strategic objectives. The methodology applied in the study combines the quantitative analysis of official data on the transport of goods obtained from secondary sources with the qualitative analysis of the results of six semi-structured interviews carried out with professionals in the sector (primary source). The results of the study warn that in Spain intermodal transport is quite far from the European average, being the second continental country in Europe that transports the largest amount of goods by road. It is concluded that, although intermodality in Spain is currently neither efficient nor a strategic objective, it should be in the medium term, since with adequate investment and planning, it will contribute to promoting efficient and sustainable freight transport management.
