Antecedentes de aplicación de la terapia celular como tecnología sanitaria en enfermedades médicas y estomatológicas

    RESUMEN Introducción: Durante las últimas décadas del siglo xx la terapia celular se ha utilizado en Cuba como tecnología sanitaria para el tratamiento alternativo de enfermedades. Objetivo: Caracterizar los antecedentes de aplicación de la terapia celular como tecnología sanitaria en enfermedades médicas y estomatológicas. Métodos: Se revisaron 72 artículos publicados entre los años 2000 y 2022 en las bases de datos SciELO, ScienceDirect, Medline y PubMed. Análisis y síntesis de la información: La utilidad de la terapia celular se relaciona con estudios realizados sobre las células. Existen tres hitos: 1838, se postula la teoría celular por Mathias Schleiden y Theodor Schwaan; 1916, la primera publicación por Danchakoff que utiliza el término "célula madre” e inicios de los 2000, la medicina regenerativa se desarrolló como un área específica del conocimiento médico. Se caracterizaron tres etapas: primera (1838-1915), segunda (1916-1999) y tercera (2000-actualidad) en las cuales se abordó el desarrollo de nuevas evidencias científicas sobre los mecanismos de acción regenerativos de células hematopoyéticas, plaquetas y factores de crecimiento. Conclusiones: El análisis realizado permite la comprensión del origen, desarrollo y actualidad de la aplicación de la terapia celular como tecnología sanitaria, la cual debe tener un carácter transformador que integre y potencie con los aportes de las ciencias básicas, clínicas y quirúrgicas para su generalización como terapéutica alternativa en enfermedades médicas y estomatológicas.

    ABSTRACT Introduction: During the last decades of the 20th century, cell therapy has been used in Cuba as a healthcare technology for alternative treatment of diseases. Objective: To characterize the background of cell therapy application as a healthcare technology in medical and stomatological diseases. Method: Seventy-two articles published between the years 2000 and 2022 from databases such as Scielo, Science Direct, Medline, and Pubmed were reviewed. Analysis and synthesis of information: The utilization of cell therapy is linked to studies conducted on cells. There are three milestones: In 1838, the cell theory was postulated by Mathias Schleiden and Theodor Schwaan; in 1916, the first publication by Danchakoff to use the term "stem cell"; and in the early 2000s, regenerative medicine emerged as a distinct area within medical knowledge. Three stages were characterized: the first stage (1838-1915), the second stage (1916-1999), and the third stage (2000-Present), focusing on the development of new scientific evidence regarding the regenerative mechanisms of hematopoietic cells, platelets, and growth factors. Conclusions: The conducted analysis enables the understanding of the origin, development, and current status of cell therapy application as a healthcare technology. This should have a transformative nature, integrating and enhancing contributions from basic, clinical, and surgical sciences to promote its widespread use as an alternative therapeutic approach in medical and stomatological diseases.
