    En el presente ensayo nos proponemos estudiar el efecto que las instituciones de encierro tienen en los procesos de conformación de las identidades sociales de las personas. Para esto, se establecerá una relación comparativa entre las dos principales teorías sociales que se han abocado al estudio de este tipo de instituciones: la teoría de la sociedad disciplinaria de Michel Foucault y la teoría interaccionista de Erving Goffman. Luego, se explorará detenidamente la metodología utilizada por Goffman, el enfoque dramatúrgico, en el estudio de las instituciones totales, y los procesos de “mortificación del yo” ocurridos al interior de estas. Por último, estableceremos un breve repaso de las principales críticas de la perspectiva de Goffman a ciertos postulados del funcionalismo norteamericano, especialmente a la teoría de la desviación de Robert Merton.

    In this essay we intend to study the effect that the institutions of confinement have on the processes of shaping people's social identities. For this, a comparative entailment will be established between the two main social theories that have focused on the study of this type of institution: Michel Foucault's theory of disciplinary society and Erving Goffman's interactionist theory. Then, we will carefully explore the methodology used by Goffman, the dramaturgical approach, in the study of total institutions, and the processes of “mortification of the self” that occur within them. Finally, we will establish a brief review of the main criticisms of Goffman's perspective to certain postulates of North American functionalism, especially to Robert Merton's theory of deviance.
