    Hasta hace algunas décadas, entre las personas que se consideraban cultas, no era habitual profundizar en los aspectos humanos de los artistas. Mantenían que “sólo importaba la obra”, sin fijarse en las circunstancias sociales por las que transcurrió su vida, su entorno familiar y los aspectos económicos y culturales de la sociedad en la que se desenvolvían Esta manera de pensar ha dado un vuelco importante y los historiadores hemos iniciado el camino que nos lleva al estudio de los rasgos humanos de las personas que han protagonizado los momentos más importantes de nuestra historia que, sin lugar a dudas, se reflejan de muchas maneras en las obras que nos han legado. La serenidad de Leonardo da Vinci, la fuerza, el orgullo y el temperamento de Miguel Ángel, el impresionante realismo de los cuadros de Velázquez, han quedado plasmados en sus obras maestras, no hay más que contemplarlas. Deseo introducirme en su personalidad a través de los documentos que nos han quedado del pintor durante el período de su vida transcurrido entre Fuente de Cantos y Llerena, hasta cumplidos los treinta años que decidió instalarse, por motivos obvios, en Sevilla. Les invito a viajar a través del tiempo. Nos vamos a trasladar 400 años atrás, si bien estimo que para estudiar cualquier suceso histórico o alguno de sus personajes, es imprescindible conocer la época en la que vivieron, ya que difícilmente podremos entender con nuestra mentalidad actual los comportamientos y actitudes de aquellos tiempos

    Until a few decades ago, among people who considered themselves cultured, it was not common to delve into the human aspects of artists. They maintained that “only the work mattered,” without paying attention to the social circumstances in which their lives passed, their family environment and the economic and cultural aspects of the society in which they developed. This way of thinking has taken a significant turn and we historians have begun the path that leads us to the study of the human traits of the people who have starred in the most important moments in our history that, without a doubt, are reflected in many ways. in the works they have left us. The serenity of Leonardo da Vinci, the strength, pride and temperament of Michelangelo, the impressive realism of Velázquez’s paintings, have been captured in his masterpieces, you just have to contemplate them. I want to introduce myself to his personality through the documents that the painter has left us during the period of his life that passed between Fuente de Cantos and Llerena, until he was thirty years old when he decided to settle, for obvious reasons, in Seville. I invite you to travel through time. We are going to go back 400 years, although I believe that to study any historical event or any of its characters, it is essential to know the era in which they lived, since we will hardly be able to understand with our current mentality the behaviors and attitudes of those times.
