Los mapas están compuestos por elementos geográficos y ornamentales. Estos últimos además de pertenecer a la marginalia decorativa de la cartografía nos transmite un mensaje concreto, cumpliendo la función para la que había sido creado. A la vez, los tipos y la decoración de cartelas han ido evolucionando paralelamente al proceso artístico imperante en cada momento histórico. A lo largo del periodo estudiado las características de estos grabados han sido muy distintos tanto por la belleza ornamental como por las implicaciones sociales o políticas que han pretendido. Durante esta época se han seleccionado todos aquellos mapas que tenían representado el territorio andaluz, para así examinar la transformación de las cartelas en una misma región geográfica.

The maps are composed of geographical and ornamental elements. The latter, in addition to belonging to the decorative marginality of cartography, transmits a specific message, fulfilling the function for which it was created. At the same time, the types and decoration of cartouche have evolved in parallel with the artistic process prevailing in each historical moment. Throughout the period studied the characteristics of these engravings have been very different both for the ornamental beauty and for the social or political implications they have intended. During this time, all those maps that represented the Andalusian territory were selected, in order to examine the transformation of the cartouche in the same geographical region.
