    Beauty itself, with no mediation, would kill us. “Man cannot see God and live.” Artifice is necessary to disguise the real lest its intrinsic overwhelming beauty make us mad. Beauty and its simulation are necessary disguises for the real. Beauty is not an objective quality but rather a sentiment that arises out of the potential for the imagination to make infinite associations that grasp reality only in limited aspects of its plenitude. Kant analyzed aesthetic impressions as arising from the free play of our faculties of perception and judgment. The unlimited freedom of imagination in contemplating reality can be stimulated most by what is not clearly delimited or classifiable. Cervantes knows this well. Hence his fascination with gender fluidity.

El artificio es necesario para disfrazar lo real para que su abrumadora belleza intrínseca no nos vuelva locos. La belleza y su simulación son disfraces necesarios para lo real. La belleza no es una cualidad objetiva sino más bien un sentimiento que surge del potencial de la imaginación para hacer infinitas asociaciones que captan la realidad sólo en aspectos limitados de su plenitud. Kant analizó como las impresiones estéticas surgieran del libre juego de nuestras facultades de percepción y juicio. La libertad ilimitada de la imaginación al contemplar la realidad puede ser estimulada más por aquello que no está claramente delimitado o clasificable. Cervantes lo sabe bien. De ahí su fascinación por la fluidez de género
