    Los cetáceos son mamíferos marinos que habitan en todos los océanos de nuestro planeta. América Central posee una ubicación privilegiada, un clima tropical y costas tanto en el océano Pacífico como en el mar Caribe. La presencia de cetáceos ha sido documentada en todos los países de la región, sin embargo, la investigación científica ha sido relativamente baja, con respecto a las realizadas en otras regiones de América y en el mundo. El objetivo de esta revisión fue conocer los avances en las investigaciones científicas desarrolladas sobre cetáceos en los últimos diez años en América Central. Este trabajo facilita identificar los vacíos de información, esto a su vez, permite, conducir el desarrollo de investigaciones científicas de los próximos años para contribuir a generar herramientas de conservación. Artículos, notas científicas y trabajos de graduación publicados en los últimos diez años fueron rastreados a través de repositorios digitales. América Central presenta una riqueza de 32 especies de cetáceos, en investigaciones realizadas destacan Costa Rica y El Salvador con un mayor número de investigaciones, mientras que Nicaragua con menor cantidad. Las investigaciones han abordado aspectos desde nuevos registros, acústica, comportamiento, patologías, distribución y abundancia. Aunque ha habido avances en términos de investigación científica, mayores esfuerzos deberán encaminarse en los próximos años para incrementar el conocimiento científico que contribuya al manejo y conservación de estos organismos.

    Cetaceans are marine mammals that inhabit all the oceans of our planet. Central America has a privileged location, a tropical climate and coasts in both the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea. The presence of cetaceans has been documented in all the countries of the region; however, scientific research has been relatively low, with respect to research carried out in other regions of America and in the world. The objective of this review was to know the advances in scientific research developed on cetaceans in the last ten years in the Central American region, allowing the identification of information gaps and thus being able to conduct scientific research in the coming years to fill the gaps in knowledge and contribute to generating conservation tools. Articles, scientific notes, and thesis of undergraduate published in the last ten years were tracked through digital repositories. Central America has a richness of 32 species of cetaceans, in investigations carried out Costa Rica and El Salvador stands out with a greater number of investigations, while Nicaragua less. Research has addressed aspects from new records, distribution and abundance, acoustics and behavior and pathologies. Although there have been advances in terms of scientific research, greater efforts should be directed in the coming years to increase the scientific knowledge that contributes to the management and conservation of these organisms.
