Alveolitis is a frequent complication after dental extraction, mainly in the lower jaw, especially in the posterior area and in the female sex; it is also due to risk factors; it presents symptoms such as intense pain in the first three days. The objective of this bibliographic review was to find efficient therapeutic alternatives to treat symptoms and signs of this complication. Among them are Hepar sulphur, low power laser, honey, propolis, oleozon, greater plantain, among others. Different alternatives were evidenced to treat alveolitis, relieve pain and improve healing; the alternative treatments proved to have similar or superior effects to those used in current clinical practice using drugs, alvogyl or alveogyl.
