This paper deals with the philosophy of philosophy of Wilhelm Dilthey, which should be considered as ground-breaking for being one of the first explicit and generous expositions of metaphilosophical questions. In order to navigate through his metaphilosophical thought, I will examine three main themes of his theoretical development: first, his attempts of defining philosophy via the historical method as an activity standing among art, religion and science; second, the recognition of a permanent philosophical attitude throughout history and beyond systems; third, the consideration of philosophy as a theory of worldviews that arises not from the thought, but from the liveliness (Lebendigkeit) of its practitioners. Despite not always known, these three features will lay the theoretical foundations of almost all metaphilosophical debates in the 20th century.
