Endodontic treatment aims to reduce the bacterial load in root canals to solve any pulp or periapical pathology through proper cleaning, chemical-mechanical shaping and obturation of the canal. Phytotherapeutics are great allies in this process since they have numerous biological effects that favor the success of endodontic therapy. The objective of this study was to investigate and gather information on the therapeutic actions of the different phytotherapeutic “essential oils” that can be used against microorganisms present in endodontic pathologies. This study was carried out by means of a bibliographic search in databases such as: PubMed, Scielo, Scopus, Taylor Francis and Google Scholar. The key terms were: “Herbal Plants”, “Endodontics”, “Phytotherapy”, “Essential oils”, “Enterococcus”, “Root Canal” combined by the Boolean operators “AND, OR, NOT”. Results: The essential oils of plants found have shown promising results in vitro, against bacteria in endodontic treatments. Conclusions: Some of the phytotherapeutic substances considered, could be a potential alternative to substitute NaClO, however more in vitro studies are needed to determine their efficacy.
