This paper proposes a theoretical model for promoting digital inclusion for students with visual impairment in Nigerian higher education. Despite the importance of education, persons with disabilities, particularly the visually impaired, have not fully benefited from it in Nigeria. The model aims to address the digital divide and promote equal access to education for students with visual impairment.
A population of 47 VIS from 17 departments were used for the study. Qualitative data, collected through open-ended surveys or interviews, will be analyzed thematically to explore participants’ experiences with the intervention and its impact. The results show that lack of materials by 18.8% was rated as the major challenge militating against digital inclusivity of students with visual impairment in the Nigerian higher education system, lack of untrained personnel required for effective learning by the visually impaired students, unavailability of scholarship remained one of the problems facing the visually impaired students in higher education among others. It recommended for a specialized technological gadget such as AI braille-enabled laptops to be designed and invented to enhance digital inclusion of students with visual impairment and the provision of training on the use of this model in order to fully incorporate it into the teaching and learning process for digital inclusion of students with visual impairment in the Nigerian higher education system.
