In the central semiarid region of the province of CÛrdoba, Argentina, there are notmany fresh forage-producing annual legumes in the autumn-winter-springperiod. The availability of species or cultivars of this family may allow theimprovement of the soil nutrient level and of the quality of the cattle diet. One ofthe species that is known to produce fresh forage in good quantity and qualityduring this period with no irrigation is the Vicia dasycarpa. With the aim ofobtaining phenotypes adapted to the climatic conditions of the central region ofCÛrdoba, a breeding program of a Vicia dasycarpa population R.P. N∫ 250 has been initiated using the adaptative answer to the enviromental conditions as theselection criterion. The selection characters were: tolerance to conditions of lowprecipitation and low temperature, growth vigor, cycle length, insect anddisease resistance and the weight of 1000 seeds. The constant selection ofindividual plants that showed a better genotype-enviroment adaptationdetermined a change in the genetic frequency of the selected characters in thephenotypes in relation to the original population. The results of this geneticadvance are expressed in the new cultivar of Vicia dasycarpa named "TolseF.C.A."
