  Este artículo analiza las representaciones artísticasde las obras de misericordia realizadasen España durante la Edad Media, destacandosus rasgos comunes con el arte europeode su tiempo: la vinculación con la monarquía, la nobleza y un público laico, la utilización de exemplahagiográficos, la aparición de Cristo como testigo de las obras caritativas y la conexión de estascon el Juicio final. Lo específico del arte español es su carácter concreto, no teórico, que se manifiesta figurativamente en los ejemplos de santos y las representaciones de costumbres e instituciones caritativas,como la limosna funeraria o la Pia Almoina.

  This article analyses the artistic depictionsof the works of mercy that were produced in Spain during the Middle Ages, highlightingtheir common features with the European artof their age: the connection with the monarchy, the nobility, and a lay audience, the use of hagiographic exempla, the appearance of Christ as a witness to the charitable works, and the connection of theseworks with the Last Judgment. What is specific ofSpanish art is its concrete, non-theoretical character, which is manifested figuratively in the examples of saints and the depictionsof charitable customs and institutions,such as funeral alms or the so-called ‘Pia Almoina’ (i.e., pious alms).
