The objective of this article is to study and describe the processes and artisan practices around the trade union examination. Based on social history, as well as cultural history and anthropology, a long-term analysis work is carried out regarding the forms of entry and exit of artisans, the means they used to control the examination and the ways in which groups of artisans established networks in the face of monopolistic practices exercised by the unions in the capital of New Spain. This is not a study focused on a trade or union, since the sources are heterogeneous; however, it is intended to be an approximation to the vicissitudes that artisans generally went through for a long time and on a daily basis.
