This systematic literature review provides an overview of the status of teacher digital competence (TDC) regarding the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in higher education across relevant publications from the past 5 years (2019-2024). The review focuses on databases such as Web of Science, Scopus, and the Education Resources Information Center. Following a rigorous selection process including search terms, inclusion and exclusion criteria, and an assessment of article quality, 29 articles were selected from an initial set of 112. The central purpose of this systematic review is to gather, examine, and synthesize the available scientific evidence on the research topic, in order to generate robust and well-founded conclusions. It is anticipated that this review will provide valuable insights for educators, researchers, and policymakers interested in enhancing teacher digital competence in higher education concerning the use of AI. By better understanding the role of AI in this context, effective strategies can be identified to integrate technology more efficiently into educational practice and enhance learning quality for all students and teaching quality for educators.
