Based on the concept of freedom (libertas) as defined in Roman legal and literary sources, this work examines, on one hand, the causes of dispossession of freedom that constitute a capitis deminutio maxima, as well as the recovery of this status libertatis and the subsequent reintegration of rights, by virtue of the ius postliminium and the fictio legis Corneliae. On the other hand, it analyzes slavery and the ways in which slaves could acquire freedom (consecution de statu libertatis), along with its varying implications. The relationship of patronage is examined, which arises between the ex dominus and freedman, throught operae, bona libertorum and reverentia. The analysis of these various institutions is based on the exegesis of classical sources, incorporating the main contributions from scholarly discourse pertinent to the subject matter.
