Resumen de Herramientas docentes en Urbanismo. La implementación delportafolio para una integración efectiva de teoría y práctica

María José Márquez Ballesteros, Francisco José Chamizo Nieto, Elena Enciso Martínez, Daniel Navas Carrillo

  • The teaching of Urban Planning in Architecture Schools, typically practical and based on lectures, faces limitations in connecting theory and practice. Students tend to accumulate theoretical material without applying it until final evaluations. To improve this dynamic, the E.T.S. of Architecture in Málaga implemented the use of portfolios in the Urban Planning 2 course in 2020-21, organised into three sections: summary, list of learnings, and personal contributions, submitted after each lecture. After three years (2020-23), there was an observed improvement in learning and the application of technicalconcepts. Adjustments, such as replacing the summary with a main idea and modifying the weight of each section in the grading, were made based on results and student feedback. In 2022-23, with the introduction of English-taught classes, lectures were adapted to seminars led by students under faculty supervision. In the 2023-24 academic year, the portfolio is used in both Urban Planning 2 and Urban Planning 3 for English-taught classes, adjusting to the higher level of third-year students. Additionally, it is applied in research competencies in the Urban Planning and Legislation course of the Master’s Degree in Architecture. The comparative analysis of portfolios and learning outcomes over these four years fosters innovation, dialogue, and faculty research, aiming for better results and expansion to other courses and subjects.
