La plaça del Diamant by Mercè Rodoreda is a classic of Catalan literature that is studied in the 2nd of batxillerat in the subject Valencià: llengua i literatura II. The traditional approach, based on the classic bibliography, includes information about the themes, style, symbols, structure and the production context of the work as well as biographical details of the author. This is the basic knowledge required about the novel in the university entrance exam (PAU). However, the study of Rodoreda’s novel requires an update and a reinterpretation more suitable for the 21st century, considering, aboveall, advances in feminist and gender studies, as well as taking into account the interests of the students. From this perspective, we have created a didactic proposal that includes a reading of the novel focusing on male violence. Therefore, suggesting a learning situation by focusing on identifying, classifying and interpreting male violence in Rodoreda’s novel, with the aim that students also develop a critical view on sexist violence not only applicable to the literary contest being studied, but also implementable in other cultural products and, in general, in their daily lives
