This paper presents a didactic experience that took place, during the course 2023-2024, in a course of Language Planning related to the undergraduate degree in Catalan Language and Literature. The course aims to review key concepts of applied sociolinguistics and equip students with tools to apply theoretical concepts practically.
This is crucial given the complex sociolinguistic situation in the Balearic Islands.
Students are encouraged to actively construct knowledge and learn autonomously by tackling real, complex situations that require practical application of classroom knowledge. To achieve this, a teaching innovation project was developed, involving collaboration among professors of three different courses, and was implemented in the 2023-2024 academic year. The project promotes cooperation among students through a collective study of linguistic landscapes. Language Planning students analyzed linguistic landscapes of various Palma establishments and designed language planning actions to normalize the city's linguistic landscape, targeting objectives such as changing attitudes, spreading knowledge, or increasing usage. This project has proven relevant, as students have learned the importance of detailed sociolinguistic analysis to develop policies that recognize and protect linguistic diversity while respecting various speaker communities’ rights and needs.
