The first Christians used processes known in their context to elect and appoint the ministers who presided over and governed their communities. The book of Acts describes one of these processes in some detail in its account of the election of Matthias (Acts 1:15-26). On the basis of a close analysis of this passage, the present study pursues a twofold objective. First, it seeks to identify the various stages of this process, which also appears in the election of the Seven (Acts 6:1-6). And second, it asks who is involved in this process and what roles they play. The model proposed by these texts for the election of ministers can be a reference for rethinking the process of electing bishops today in a synodal perspective.
