    La extraña desaparición de Esme Lennox (2006) de Maggie O’Farrell es una historia marcada por la locura. Esta última invade la trama, el tema, la estructura, a los narradores y a las protagonistas de la novela. Un narrador omnisciente en tercera persona y un narrador poco fiable en primera persona son los encargados de contar la historia, pero ocultan y esconden información, confunden al lector y ponen en peligro la narración. Este artículo analiza, por lo tanto, cómo O’Farrell representa la locura de forma textual a través de las obras de Booth (1961), Felman (1985), Fischer (2024), Fludernik (2009) y Gilbert y Gubar (1979). Sostengo que, para comprender la locura de Esme y Kitty, es necesario estudiar la locura del texto en su totalidad.

    Maggie O’Farrell’s The Vanishing Act of Esme Lennox (2006) is a tale marked by madness. Insanity invades the novel’s plot, theme, structure, narrators and protagonists. An omniscient third-person narrator and an unreliable first-person narrator are in charge of telling the story, but they conceal and hide information, confuse readers and jeopardise the narration. This paper, thus, analyses how O’Farrell represents madness textually through the works of Booth (1961), Felman (1985), Fischer (2024), Fludernik (2009), and Gilbert and Gubar (1979). I argue that, in order to understand Esme and Kitty’s madness, insanity needs to be studied all along with the madness of the text.
