    Entrusted to the Louvre by the Musée Guimet, this enigmatic object was purchased in Egypt by Alexandre Moret in 1914. The discovery of a sword at Soknopaiou Nesos by the Italian mission of the University of Salento allowed us to reconnect the object with its sword pommel function. It can be dated to the 3rd c. BC to 1st c. AD.

    Entré au Louvre par attribution du musée Guimet, cet objet énigmatique fut acheté en Égypte en 1914 par Alexandre Moret. La découverte d’une épée à Soknopaiou Nesos par la mission italienne de l’université de Salento a permis de réassocier l’objet à sa fonction de pommeau d’épée, datable du IIIe s. av. J.-C. au Ier s. apr. J.-C.
