Jipijapa, Ecuador
The research aimed to analyze the composition, structure, and diversity of urban trees in Isidro Ayora Canton, Guayas, Ecuador. A census of the urban trees was conducted in green areas, identifying the floristic composition at the taxonomic level, considering origin, growth habit, and evaluating the horizontal and vertical structure of the trees. The area and tree cover vary within the canton, influencing the urban green index. Diversity was calculated using various ecological indices such as IVIE, Foráneo, Shannon-Wiener, Pielou's equity, Simpson, Berger-Parker, Margalef, and Jaccard's Similarity Index. A total of 22 tree species with 330 individuals belonging to 11 botanical families were recorded, with Arecaceae being the most representative. The tree structure is mostly composed of young trees, with a total area of 21.202 m² of green spaces and 3.216 m² of tree cover. The urban green index is 2,56 m²/hab, below the WHO recommendation. The species with the highest IVIE were Roystonea regia H.B.K. Cook and Adonidia merrillii (Becc.) Becc. The biodiversity indices show a moderate species diversity, with some dominant species. Jaccard's Similarity Index revealed moderate differences in species composition, highlighting ecological variability. It is concluded that, although the green areas are significant, the diversity is moderate and introduced species predominate. It is crucial to implement management policies that promote biodiversity and the use of native species.
