In 1936, through “Beowulf: The Monsters and the Critics”, Tolkien forever influenced the study of Beowulf, as the academia around Anglo-Saxon language and culture has recognized. The progress in the study of the poem is significative, but, on the other hand, several issues linked to ancient Germanic existentialism have not been fully satisfied, such as Christian metaphysics based on the ethics and aesthetics of heroism. The objective of this text is to delve into it, taking Tolkien's reading and materials as support, and advancing in the line he opened, analyzing key fragments of the Anglo-Saxon poem. With all this, it will be concluded how the author of Beowulf, being a Christian, needed the Old Testament framework instead of the New Testament to erect his story as a literary model of his tradition, and paths of study related to the whole of Christian medieval philosophy and theology will be pointed out
