This paper examines the Iter de Londinio in Terram Sanctam, by the English Benedictine monk Matthew Paris (1200 ca.-1259). In order to prepare a new edition of the work (Pitocchelli 2024), this contribution will focus on the proposal of a new study approach to the itinerary, necessary for a more complete interpretation of the work. In particular, we will focus on the language in which the work was written, on the so called ‘macrotext’ in which the itinerary is inserted, on the historical aspects underlying the work, and on aspects of the iconographic apparatus that accompanies the maps. In the light of this new interpretative approach, the Iter de Londinio in Terram Sanctam will show itself to be a valuable testimony, capable of restoring the idea of negotium crucis as an armed pilgrimage, asit was conceived by the men of the time.
