The Cartesian conception of space represents the opening of a new, revolutionary era in the spatial conception of its time, in view of the meaning and impact of the contribution of Descartes' coordinate geometry. The articulation of arithmetic and geometry, the result of the innovative conception of the method —of the Regulae ad Directionem Ingenii (1628)— leads to understanding knowledge as a result of the relationships between the components of a system and the expression of these in terms of mathematical functions. The approach proposed here for the study of Cartesian space —as systematic or unitary— is a route of analysis that differs but complements the ontological, physical, and theological perspectives that have usually been followed for the study of space in this philosopher, and in this way, it covers an important gap. This approach locates the fundamental epistemological consequences extracted from the Cartesian methodical conception.
