Ever since acknowledging its omnipresence in thought, language and behavior, metaphor has become the spotlight of a great variety of domains, ranging from technical fields of activity to medicine, from psychology to artificial intelligence, from sociology to education. In this context, the aim of our article is to reassign metaphor to the field of language and communication, namely by highlighting the way in which this figure of speech can be used creatively in foreign language teaching and learning, to extend the lexicon and to enhance the translation ability of second-language learners. To this purpose, we will use a rather unconventional approach and focus on the use of economic metaphors in language classes designed for Philology students.
