The sociology of translation is a new direction in the research of Translation Studies, which changes the focus from the text to the translator and his/her decision-making in the process of translation. Thus, the role of the translator is rightfully considered as a central one, with good chances of raising social awareness and recognition of the translator's complex work. This new social turn in approaching the translation process and product sheds a new light also on the accountability of the translator, while turning a lot more visible his/her contribution to global communication. This paper attempts to review the development of this new turn in translation studies, while supporting and hopefully adding to the current view of the impact of social factors on translation.
