  • The paper discusses Mihnea Gheorghiu’s translation of King Lear with emphasis on the way in which it paid lip service to the imported Communist propaganda and ideology of the 1950s, and George Volceanov’s recent version, which liberates this great tragedy from all political and ideological constraints and intrusions. De-politicizing and de-bowdlerizing the Romanian translations are two of the strongest features of the New Romanian Shakespeare series edited by George Volceanov.
