The present paper is designed as a hermeneutic survey of the main representations of Don Quixote surfacing in Romanian literature over the last two centuries. The starting point is represented by the fact that whereas Don Juan is perceived as a myth with generalizing significance, Don Quixote is integrated into the Romanian culture as a symbolic embodiment of a highly-individualized spiritual type pertaining to the Hispanic context and the Baroque moment of protean aestheticism. Therefore, the impact of this literary figure upon the Romanian literature is of a lesser degree if compared to that of Don Juan, being illustrated in the works of the following authors: Ion Pillât, Lucian Blaga, Radu Boureanu, Marin Sorescu, Mircea Dinescu, D. R. Popescu.
