Antonio Meulener. Militar e inventor algecireño (1861-1912)

    En la segunda mitad del siglo XIX, el enorme prestigio que había alcanzado el ejército español en las tres centurias anteriores había decaído tras la pérdida del Imperio y de la capacidad de crear decisivas invenciones militares (grandes navíos de guerra, el galeón, las casi invencibles unidades de infantería conocidas como los tercios, el arcabuz con muelle de serpentín, el mosquete, las minas explosivas para demoler fortificaciones, etc). Pero, a pesar de esa decadencia, a finales del siglo XIX y en la primera década del XX surgió una mente privilegiada, un militar nacido en Algeciras en el año 1861, que iba a aportar nuevas y decisivas invenciones para el ejército español. Este militar se llamó Antonio Meulener Verdeguer y, entre sus valiosas invenciones, hay que mencionar una máquina criptográfica con claves imposibles de descifrar por el enemigo; el primer misil balístico de la historia, que la prensa de la época denominó “Torpedo Meulener” y, en 1912, la primera bomba termobárica o de vacío cuya fórmula destruyó cuando comprobó sus devastadores efectos.

    In the second half of the 19th century, the enormous prestige that the Spanish army had achieved in the previous three centuries had declined after the loss of the Empire and of the ability to generate decisive military inventions (large warships, the galleon, the almost invincible infantry units known as the Tercios, the arquebus with serpentine spring, the musket, explosive mines to demolish fortifications, etc.). However, despite this decline, at the end of the 19th century and in the first decade of the 20th century, a privileged mind emerged, a soldier born in Algeciras in 1861, who was to contribute new and decisive inventions to the Spanish army. His name was Antonio Meulener Verdeguer and, among his valuable inventions, we must mention a cryptographic machine with keys that were impossible for the enemy to decipher; the first ballistic missile, which the press of the time called the “Meulener Torpedo” and, in 1912, the first thermobaric or vacuum bomb whose formula he destroyed when he saw its devastating effects.
