This chapter explores the fundamental role of social capital and social innovation in regional development, emphasizing their importance in contexts characterized by depopulation and a lack of resources. The need to leverage social capital, understood as a network of relationships and mutual trust that facilitates cooperation, is identified as a key tool for driving social innovation and, consequently, promoting sustainable regional development.

The methodology employed included an exhaustive review of key theories and models on social capital and social innovation proposed by influential authors found in the academic literature. In addition, practical policies and strategies that have integrated these concepts to address specific socioeconomic challenges, such as depopulation and inequality, were analyzed. Successful cases of programs like LEADER and the Smart Specialization Strategy (S3) are highlighted, promoting social cohesion and economic development through community participation.

Despite the limitations in directly applying all strategies due to the diversity of regional contexts, the case analyses provided valuable insights into the importance of collective action and cross-sector collaboration. These elements are essential for effectively adapting and applying social capital and social innovation across different regions.

The chapter concludes by emphasizing the need for innovative approaches that strengthen community networks and improve the quality of life in various regions. The research also approaches how these concepts can be measured and applied in different contexts to foster more cohesive and sustainable regional development.

In summary, this chapter provides a comprehensive view of how social capital and social innovation can act as catalysts for regional development, highlighting the importance of cooperation and collective action in promoting sustainable and equitable economic growth.
