    In spite of their inescapable importance for Portuguese heritage and museology, the two funerary helms from the Monastery of Santa Maria da Vitória, or Batalha, have yet to be studied with the thoroughness they deserve, both in their material aspects as well as their more symbolic ones. As a result, the helms have been attributed to several potential monarchs of the Avis dynasty throughout the years – attributions which an analysis of the pieces themselves, and of the historical record, fails to support. The intention of this brief article is to help bridge these gaps by tracing the objects’ history and showing how studying medieval armament highlights dimensions which go beyond the material reality of the pieces themselves, whilst defining them in their own historical space and contexts of use.

    Apesar da sua relevância incontornável no panorama patrimonial e museológico português, os dois elmos funerários provenientes do Mosteiro de Santa Maria da Vitória, ou da Batalha, não foram ainda estudados com a profundidade que merecem, quer na sua dimensão mais física, quer no seu aspecto mais simbólico. Como resultado, ao longo dos anos têm-se multiplicado as atribuições destas peças a vários monarcas da dinastia de Avis, atribuições essas que uma análise do suporte material e do registo histórico não sustentam. É intenção deste breve artigo poder ajudar a sanar essa lacuna, traçando a história dos objectos e colocando em evidência a forma como o estudo do armamento medieval releva dimensões que extravasam a sua materialidade, ao mesmo tempo que os define num espaço e num uso próprios.
