La pittura antonina di Ostia: Rintracciare i pittori, capire i contesti

    The paintings of the second half of the second century AD constitutes an extremely diverse ensemble in the panorama of Ostian wall painting. This great diversity, both technical and stylistic, has often been justified by stylistic arguments, considering the more elaborate decorations as older and the more stylised paintings as later. The present contribution intends to present a more articulated picture, that actually shows the great qualitative and technical richness of the decorations and allows us to understand that the situation was much more complex, in which apparently very different paintings were the work of the same decorative project and shared the same repertoire, articulated in a more or less complex manner depending on the context and the patron.

    Il corpus pittorico ostiense della seconda metà del II sec. d.C. costituisce un insieme estremamente vario. Questa grande diversità, sia tecnica che stilistica, è stata spesso giustificata con argomentazioni “cronologiche”, considerando come più antiche le decorazioni più elaborate e più tarde le pitture più stilizzate. Il presente contributo intende presentare un quadro più articolato, che mostri in realtà la grande ricchezza qualitativa e tecnica delle decorazioni e che permetta di comprendere che la situazione era molto più complessa, e che pitture apparentemente molto diverse sono opera di un medesimo progetto decorativo e condividono lo stesso repertorio, articolato in modo più o meno complesso a seconda del contesto e della committenza.
