The essay presents the outcomes of some research related to the contribution made by the peri-urban and rural system to the territory to make it resilient and ready to face the challenges ofthe third millennium. In particular, issues related to land consumption, the functions of rural tissues in the regeneration process of cities conterminous to them are investigated. One wonders about the dimensions involved and the speeds of transformation. Are there two speeds? The cityand the accelerations of economic and social change and a rural system with slow development?The two different scales and levels of service and infrastructure provision and environmental conditions need to be considered.
