    Resumen Este trabajo reconstruye la vida de los mitayos y sus familias en la Potosí de la segunda mitad del siglo XVII. Analizo los padrones potosinos de la Numeración General ordenada por el Virrey Duque de La Palata en 1683 y la correspondencia que generaron sus reformas. Identifico algunas diferencias que hubo entre mitayos según su provincia de origen y el endurecimiento de las condiciones laborales generales. El artículo busca colaborar con la reconstrucción de la historicidad de la mita, identificando rupturas y cambios, además de las especificidades de un período caracterizado por la decadencia en la producción de plata.

    Abstract The aim of this article is to reconstruct the life of the mitayos and their families in Potosí in the second half of the seventeenth cen tury. It analyzes the Potosí information included in the General Inspection ordered by the Viceroy Duke of La Palata in 1683 and the correspondence generated by his reforms. I identify some differences between mitayos according to their province of origin and the hardening of general working conditions. The article seeks to contribute to the reconstruction of the historicity of the mita, identifying ruptures and changes, as well as the specificities of a period characterized by the decline in silver production.
