    Esta investigación propone una nueva lectura de la documentación de Las Huelgas de Burgos y de los monasterios de monjas cistercienses bajo su autoridad entre 1187 y 1540. La institución que formaron fue mucho más inestable de lo que se pensaba. Cabe distinguir dos congregaciones distintas. La primera se creó, en teoría, en 1189 y tuvo vigencia jurídica en el siglo XIII, pero no tuvo efectos concretos. La segunda se creó de nuevo en los años 1370, con otros miembros, y fue creciendo a lo largo del periodo estudiado. Esta sí tuvo efectos, en particular en las elecciones de abadesas.

    This research provides a new analysis of the documentation of the Abbey of santa Maria la Real de Las Huelgas at Burgos and of the Cistercian nunneries under its authority between 1187 and 1540. The institution they had formed was much more unstable than previously thought. Two distinct congregations can be distinguished. The first was theoretically created in 1189 and was legally effective in the 13th century, but had no concrete effects. The second was created anew in the 1370s, with other members, and grew throughout the period under study. It did have effects, particularly in the election of abbesses.
