El testamento de García Fernández (1241): un ejemplo de la concepción de la muerte de la nobleza castellana en el siglo XIII

    El presente estudio analiza la mentalidad respecto a la muerte de los estamentos privilegiados, especialmente de la nobleza, y la gestión y reparto de sus posesiones, a través del estudio del testamento de García Fernández, mayordomo mayor de Fernando III y tutor de Alfonso X el Sabio. Para ello, se hará un análisis diplomático de esta tipología documental, comparando las últimas voluntades de distintos miembros de la aristocracia castellana bajomedieval, así como del estado de la cuestión respecto a esta problemática; para terminar analizando las disposiciones recogidas en el testamento del citado García Fernández, del que también analizaremos su figura. Se llega a la conclusión de que los individuos que formaban la cúspide del régimen señorial castellano del siglo XIII hacían grandes esfuerzos económicos y espirituales por la salvación de su alma. Además, puesto que el testamento que se estudia no es un original, sino una copia del siglo XVI, se estudia detenidamente la tradición documental del mismo.

    This essay studies the mentality of the aristocracy regarding death of the privileged estates, especially nobility, and the management and the distribution of their possessions through the study of the testament of García Fernández, High Steward of king Ferdinand III and tutor of Alfonso X. To achieve this, a diplomatic study of this type of documents will be conducted, comparing it with other examples of the Castilian aristocracy, as well as reviewing the current state of research on this issue.  The study will conclude with an analysis of the provisions contained inthe testament of García Fernández, whose figure will be also examined. We can conclude that the people who were part of the Castilian stately regime of the 13th century made great economic and spiritual efforts for the salvation of their soul. Furthermore, because the will being studied is not anoriginal, but a 16th century copy, its documental tradition will be carefully examined.
