  • Resumen
    • This article argues that the coverage in ¡Hola! magazine of King Juan Carlos I has helped him navigate public scandal over the course of the past decade by actively minimizing the societal perception of shame regarding his actions. I combine Ari Adut’s theory on the sociological manifestations of scandal with Sara Ahmed’s work on shame and apology to show how ¡Hola! both crafts a narrative of Juan Carlos I’s exile to the UAE as a simple beachside retirement and subtly pressures its readers to view him as innocent of any corruption charges he may face.
