Resumen de Epidemias de cólera en Oviedo y zona central de Asturias en el siglo XIX

P. Gómez Gómez

  • Throughout the 19th century, four cholera epidemics affected the population of Asturias. From 1834-1835, 1854-1855, 1865-1866 and in 1885. The information contained in this study has been taken from death certificates of the Catholic Church's register of Deceased (1834-1835), from Certificates of Oviedo Town Council's Registry Office (1841-69) and from the corresponding courts. The first two epidemics severly affected the central part of the region and thus, the distric of Oviedo and the capital City. The theat rate during the cholera epidemic of 1854-1855 in the distric of Oviedo reached about 3% of population, of which 47% were male and 53% were female. The highest mortality rate, in both males and females, affected people between ages of 1-4 years old.
