  • Age at first birth, age at last birth and the lenght of childbearing period of 168 postreproductive women were analyzed in Porvernir, Tierra del Fuego (Chile). Influences of both biological and socio-cultural parameters were analyzed. The mean age of mothers at first birth is 23.66 years (S.D. 5.39) and the mean age at last birth is 32.11 years (S.D. 6.29). The childbearing period is 8.89 years. The comparison of the relatively short childbearing period with the long reproductive span described for this population (PASCUAL et al., 2003) has a special interest, and these results point out possible consequences for the fertility of the population.
