In this paper the lenght of birth interval is analysed from 3.533 reconstituted families of Valdepeñas de Jaén (Jaén, Spain) who have completed their reproductive life between 1841 and 1990. For the first century studied, time trend reveals low average birth interval; from 1940 to 1990, birth spacing has shown an important increase. Although shor birth intervals are related with high family size, data show a strong association between birth spacing and infant mortality in Valdepeñas de Jaén. Both, previous and subsequent short birth intervals are associated with higher mortality rates. Mortality risk was increased by birth order effect.
