  • The Aromuns (also called Aromanians or Vlachs) ar a Romance-speaking population of 600,000 - 1,000,000 inhabiting in the Southern Balkans (N Greece, Macedonia, Albania, Bulgaria), and in Romania. We have typed 11 Alu insertion polymorphims in four Aromun and five Balkan populations in order to verify the genetic consequences of different scenarios that have been suggested for the ethnogenesis of the Aromuns. To the hypotheses seem to be ruled out: Aromuns ar not Latinized Greeks, and do not share a common origin with Romanians. The relatively homogeneous genetic landscape in the Balkans suggests demographic and genetic continuity with language and other elements of culture overlaid without a significant genetic contribution.
