  • The Otomí people, of uncertain phylogeny and origin, are found in several Mexican states. This current study we've analyzed 13 autosomics STR's in two Otomíes communities belonging to the state of Hidalgo: 97 coming from the Ixmiquilpan valley and 93 from the Otomí-Tepehua mountains. Results suggest, firstly, that these two communities, traditionally classified by ethnographers as belonging to the same group are indeed biologically different. Secondly, when we compare these results with those obtained on mestizo populations in Mexico city, the comparison allows us to determine the mestizo gradient exhibited by these indigenous communities and help us to evaluate an optimal sampling technique strategy.
