CD4 Alu/STR variaton has been tested in the Southern Spaniards and Moyen Atlas Berbers to ascertain the degree of genetic relationships between these samples representatives of the two shores of the Western Mediterranean. Two new haplotype combinations (75(+) and 80 (-)) were found in Berbers. The CD4 Alu/STR haplotype distribution in South Spaniards is similar to that of the other Europeans, the only special feature is the slight presence of the 90(+) and 130(+) typical SubSaharan haplotypes. Berbers are characterised by a high number of different haplotypes (18) with intermediate heterozygosity values (0.846) in comparison with other North African groups, and by a high frequency of the 110 (-) combination that has been proposed as representative of the ancient Northwest African populations. A geographical gradient of Sub-Saharan gene contribution for the CD4 locus has been detected in North Africa, with intermediate values for the Moyen Atlas Berbers in comparison with the high and low values found in Mauritanians and North Moroccan Berbers, respectively.
