  • Resumen
    • Mitochondrial HV1 and HV2 sequences and restriction analysis were characterized in a population sample from the southern part of the Pas Valley (Northern Spain) and compared with other Iberian, Europe, and North Africa populations. Our results confirm that the population studied constitutes a rather isolated group clearly differentiated from the rest of the compared populations, perhaps to a higher degree than their neighbours, the Basques. The Southern Pasiegos are characterized by high frequencies of pre*-V1, and V, and extreme value of U3 haplogroups. Mitochondrial data are consistent with an origin of this population as descendants of primitive North Iberians, having experienced periods of relative isolation mainly in recent times but nor strong founder effects.
