In current methodologies of adult age at death estimation based on coxal bone (pubic symphysis and auricular surface) some application problems are observed. These methodologies show a lack of reliability adn accuracy in individuals older than 40. Recently, some studies point to the acetabular area as a possible element useful for adult age estimation. Therefore, with the aim of evauating the acetabular area for adult age estimation, 484 coxal bones from 242 males of sex and age known belonging to the Esqueletos Identificados of Coimbra (Portugal) were analysed. From those coxal bones 266 were used as a reference series and 218 as a test series. The age estimation of the problem series was carried out by using 7 morphological variables and their combinations. The probability of belonging to a specific age group was calculated by Bayes Theorem at intervals of 5 years. 89% of the test series was classified correctly. Deviation in a specific age was not found. From these results, it seems possible to develop a reliable methodology of adult age at death estimation from the acetabular are able to overcome some problems of the present methodology.
