  • Resumen
    • Samples from three pre-Columbian archaeological sites from Cuba belonging to the Ciboney culture have been analyzed. The ciboneys were aborigines that inhabited the Western half of Cuba and become extinct during the XVI century; therefore, their genealogical relationships are subject of controversy. We have retrieved sequences from the HVR 1 of the mtDNA form Ciboney samples. Several phylogenetic analyses point to South America as the most probable point of origin of the Caribbean settlers. Our hypothesis is that were at least three migrations from South America into the Caribbeanm associated to different archaeological horizons and corresponding to the ancestors of the Ciboneys, the Tainos and the Caribs.
